About Malmstrom AFB, Montana
Malmstrom AFB is a community of 4,131 people in Cascade County, just east of Great Falls. In 1939, worried by the war in Europe, the Great Falls Chamber of Commerce asked Montana's senators, Burton K. Wheeler and James E. Murray, to bring a military post to the city. Work on Great Falls Army Air Base began on June 8, 1942, and the first B-17 Flying Fortress touched down on November 30, 1942.
From November 1942 to October 1943, four bomber groups trained here and then flew raids over Germany with the Eighth Air Force. After that the base went to the Air Transport Command, which built a mess hall, a theater, a post exchange and a hospital with 400 beds. When the Air Force became its own service in September 1947, the post became Great Falls Air Force Base.
- 8,000 planes for the SovietsDuring World War II the base was a link in the Lend-Lease supply line to the Soviet Union. P-39 Airacobras, C-47 Skytrains, B-25 Mitchells and A-20 Havocs arrived by rail and were assembled on base. American pilots ferried them across Canada to Fairbanks, Alaska, where Soviet crews took over for the leg into Siberia. The shipments ended in September 1945, after about 8,000 aircraft had passed through in 21 months.
- Training for the Berlin AirliftIn 1948 the Soviet Union cut off land travel into West Berlin, and the Western allies decided to feed the city by air. Great Falls was picked as the only place to train replacement crews for the C-54 Skymasters flying the airlift. Radio beacons made the base resemble Berlin's Tempelhof Airport, and hundreds of pilots and flight engineers practiced simulated Berlin runs here before heading to Europe.
- Named for Col. MalmstromShot down on his 58th combat mission of World War II, Colonel Einar Axel Malmstrom became American commander of the South Compound at Stalag Luft I, a prison camp in Barth, Germany. Later vice wing commander at Great Falls, he made many friends in town before dying in a T-33 crash on August 21, 1954. Residents pushed to rename the base for him, and it was officially dedicated as Malmstrom AFB on June 15, 1956.
- Home of the 341st Missile WingThree Air Force bases keep and run the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile, and Malmstrom is the largest of them. It is home to the 341st Missile Wing of the Air Force Global Strike Command.
