About West Union, Illinois
The Handy family were the first permanent settlers of Clark County. Thomas Handy and his sons John and Stephen came from near Vincennes to Union Prairie in the spring of 1815. They raised a crop of corn, built cabins and brought their families that fall. John Handy settled on the land where West Union now stands.
West Union grew up along the Big Four Railroad in the western part of York Township. By 1907 it was still a fairly new town. Even so, it ranked fifth in size in Clark County. On the Big Four line in the county, only Marshall was a bigger place for business.
