About Black Eagle, Montana

Black Eagle is a community of 949 people in Cascade County, Montana, a suburb of Great Falls. It grew up around the Boston & Montana smelter, which went under construction in 1891, and around the refineries that followed. The Anaconda Company took control of the smelter in 1910, and in 1917 August Cor opened a post office in his store, which gave the town its official name.

  • First called Little ChicagoBefore it had a post office, the town went by Little Chicago, a nickname that pointed to its smelters, refineries and industrial character. The nickname gave way to Black Eagle when August Cor's post office opened in 1917.
  • Named for Black Eagle FallsThe town takes its name from Black Eagle Falls on the Missouri River. Capt. Meriwether Lewis named the falls, and the town adopted that name in 1917.
  • The smelter, 1891 to 1982The Boston & Montana smelter defined the town's skyline. Building began in 1891, and the Anaconda Company took it over in 1910. The smelter was demolished on September 18, 1982.
