About Chamizal, New Mexico
Chamizal is a community of 51 people in Socorro County, New Mexico, and New Mexico State Road 408 runs through it. It grew up as the sister village of nearby Polvadera, and one mission church served both places in the early days, though few records of that first church have survived.
- Three rounds of floodsFloodwaters struck Chamizal in the 1890s, again in 1929 and once more in 1937. Together those floods washed away much of the village, leaving few of its early buildings behind.
- The schoolhouse on the hillOne building outlasted all three floods. The old schoolhouse stood on high ground at the end of Escuela Street, above the water's reach, and it was the only part of early Chamizal to survive.
