About Luis Lopez, New Mexico

Luis Lopez is a community of 66 people in Socorro County, on the Rio Grande between Socorro and San Antonio. Its name goes back to a hacienda of the 1600s, and a farming village grew up here by the early to mid 1830s, first on the river's west bank a little east of where it stands today.

Most of the village still lies on the flood plain, and levees keep the Rio Grande out. In May 1941 a severe flood forced the families living there to evacuate. Today Luis Lopez is a mix of farms and a small suburb of Socorro, and new wells have helped it grow.

“San Jose mission at Luis Lopez, now over a century old, is another example of a community built church well maintained by the local families.”
Paul Harden, 2007
  • Captain López's haciendaIn 1667 Captain Luis López served as alcalde mayor of Senecú, a Piro pueblo, and he seems to have had his hacienda across the river, on the Rio Grande's east bank. The estancia was abandoned after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Travelers still wrote about it in their journals during the 18th century, and the later village carries his name.
  • On the census since 1850New Mexico's censuses of 1833 and 1845 both listed Luis Lopez, and later counts included it every decade from 1850 through at least 1980, with one gap in 1870. That missing year is probably when the villagers left for a short time and rebuilt at their present spot, above the flood plain.
  • The school closed in 1952In 1952 the Luis Lopez School District was merged into the Socorro School District, and the village school closed. Neighbors kept using the building as a community center for some years afterward. Children here now attend Socorro Consolidated Schools, with Socorro High School as their high school.
