About Champion, Michigan

Champion sits in Champion Township, Marquette County, a township of 250 people at the 2020 census. Settlers first came in 1863 to a hilly country that held huge beds of iron ore. Farming never amounted to much here, and potatoes were the main crop, but mining and smelting went on at a large scale. A post office opened in 1869 and took its name from the nearby Champion Iron Mine.

The Marquette, Houghton & Ontonagon Railroad ran through the village, which lay thirty-two miles west of Marquette. In 1871 the Champion Mine's shipments came to 67,588 tons of ore and 5,094 tons of pig iron. By the early 1880s the mining town had its own Catholic parish, its own meat markets and a surgeon paid by the iron company.

  • A surgeon for the mineDr. I. Freund was born in Germany in 1846 and came to the United States in 1855. He finished medical school at the state university in Ann Arbor in 1872, then practiced in Marquette and L'Anse. In 1879 he moved to Champion as surgeon for the Champion Iron Company, a post he still held when the county history appeared in 1883.
  • Upper Michigan's first native priestRev. Thomas J. Atfield was born in Marquette in 1857 and studied in Montreal and Milwaukee. When Bishop Vertin ordained him in 1880, he became the first man born in Upper Michigan to be ordained by the church there. After a stint as assistant at Hancock, he took charge of Champion's Church of the Sacred Heart in February 1882, along with the parish at Michigamme.
  • Horses poled upriverGeorge Huber, born near Strasbourg, came to Lake Superior in 1863 working for the railroad. He brought two carloads of horses ashore at Flat Rock, near Escanaba, and moved them up the river to the mills. In 1878 he settled in Champion and opened a meat market, which the 1883 county history counted among the best arranged on the Upper Peninsula.
  • An accordionist born hereViola Turpeinen, a Finnish-American musician who played the accordion, was born in Champion in 1909.
