About Fly Creek, New York

The village and its valley took their names from a spot called The Fly. It lay high in the hills between Otsego Lake and the valley, nearly surrounded by old forest. It is thought to have been a small lake in early times. A thick mass of tufted plants later covered its whole surface.

In 1813, Clark Brow came to Fly Creek as a workman in the machine shop of Jarvis and Todd. He built and operated the first cotton machinery in this section of the country.
