About Schuyler Lake, New York

Schuyler Lake is a hamlet of 189 people in the town of Exeter, Otsego County. It sits at the south end of Canadarago Lake, south of Richfield Springs, and it also carries the Mohawk name Kaniatarake, meaning "on the lake." State Route 28 and County Route 22 cross in the middle of the hamlet.

Its best-known building is the stone union church that George Herkimer built for the whole community. Before it went up, one local religious society held its meetings at the Tunnicliff place. The 1878 county history dates the church to 1838, while a 1950 Utica newspaper account says it was put up in 1839-40.

“The history of the old church provides a unique example of the wide religious tolerance in America.”
Daily Press, Utica, 1950
  • One church, four faithsInstead of building separate churches, people from four faiths gave money for a single stone building they could share. Those four were the Christian Society, the Free Will Baptists, the Methodists and the Universalists. The Schuyler Lake Stone Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Never a resident ministerThe Universalists took over the Old Stone Church in 1874 and were still using it in 1950. In all those years, the Utica Daily Press reported, the church had never had a minister who lived in the village.
  • A trolley stopElectric trolleys of the Southern New York Railroad once stopped in the hamlet, on the line that ran between Oneonta and Mohawk, and they linked Schuyler Lake to the towns along that route.
