About Charlemont, Massachusetts

Rev. Jonathan Leavitt became Charlemont's minister in 1767, but his Loyalist views angered the town. In 1777 residents closed the church and posted a constable to keep him out. Leavitt preached in the schoolhouse until his dismissal in 1785. He later sued and won 700 pounds.

Several of Leavitt's descendants stayed in the area and ran stations on the Underground Railroad. Roger Hooker Leavitt, a colonel and Charlemont's state representative, and his brother Hart sheltered many people escaping slavery.
