About Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts

Jonathan Catlin and James Ryder were the first settlers of Shelburne. Between 1752 and 1756 they settled on farms at Shelburne Falls. Marked trees showed the trail from Deerfield. Riders caught out at night got down and held the horse's tail. The animal's instincts kept them on the path.

The Deerfield River splits Shelburne Falls in two. The river is the line between the towns of Shelburne and Buckland. So the village is the government center of two townships.

  • A beloved stage driverIn 1874, William Deming bought the stage route between Shelburne Falls and Ashfield. Known as Uncle Bill Deming, he owned and drove it for over thirty years, until his death.
