About Shelburne, Massachusetts

Settlers arrived in 1756, when the area still belonged to Deerfield. In 1768 it was organized as a district named for William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne. The Irish-born Petty later served as British prime minister during the Revolutionary War. The district became a full town in 1775.
