About Turners Falls, Massachusetts

Turners Falls is a village of 4,512 people in the town of Montague, in Franklin County, and it serves as the business district for the whole town. In 1866 Colonel Alvah Crocker of Fitchburg came to see the great falls of the Connecticut River and resolved to build a planned mill town, following the example of Lowell and Holyoke. His idea was to dam the river, dig a power canal and draw factories with cheap water power.

His brother William P. Crocker, a civil engineer, drew up the town plan in 1867. Mill sites lined the canal, house lots were set aside for the workers, and the streets formed a grid of numbered cross streets along Avenue A, a broad main street planted with trees. The first buyer came in 1868, when the John Russell cutlery company moved over from Greenfield, and its new works were the biggest cutlery plant anywhere at that time.

  • Named for the Falls FightIn 1676, during King Philip's War, Captain William Turner led about 160 mounted soldiers from Hadley against a Native camp beside the falls, striking without warning. The Pocumtuk, Nipmuc and Wabanaki peoples shared the spot for its salmon and shad. More than 300 Native people died, many of them women and children. As the soldiers pulled back, a counterattack killed at least 40 of them, and Turner was among the dead.
  • A turning point in the warPeople at the time called it the Battle of Turner's Falls, and historians often see it as a turning point in King Philip's War. Within a month the English campaign in the Connecticut Valley came to a sudden stop, and the war ended soon after. Turner's body was found about a month after the fight. He was laid to rest on high ground just west of the spot where he was killed, and a tablet marks the place today.
  • Reconciliation Day, 2004Montague used its 250th anniversary to recognize the tragedy at the falls. On May 19, 2004, the Board of Selectmen and the town stood with representatives of several Native American tribes at a Reconciliation Day ceremony.
