About Chehalis, Washington
Chehalis is a city of 7,439 people and the seat of Lewis County, close to where the Newaukum River runs into the Chehalis. Schuyler and Eliza Saunders, he from New York and she from Ireland, started a farm here in 1850, and their marshy land became known as Saunders' Bottom. For years the mud and the lack of roads kept the place a farm rather than a town.
That changed in 1873, when the Northern Pacific Railroad laid its track across the Saunders claim. Superintendent J. W. Sprague asked Eliza Saunders to donate land for a depot, and when she refused, he chose a site at Newaukum, three miles south and up a hill. Residents sent him a petition and lost, so they began raising a red flag, which trains had to stop for. The trains kept stopping until the railroad put Chehalis on its schedule. Local businessmen then built a warehouse beside the track, the town's first building, and in 1874 the county seat moved here from Claquato. Chehalis was incorporated on November 23, 1883.
“after travelling four miles of bad road, through mud above your horse's knees, you come out of the woods at Mr. Saunders'.”
- Renamed in 1870Schuyler Saunders opened a post office in his house in 1858. Obadiah B. McFadden took it over in 1870 and gave it the name Chehalis, which the state legislature accepted in 1879. The name comes from a principal village of the Lower Chehalis people near today's Westport, and it means "place of sand" or "shifting sand."
- The oldest house in Lewis CountyIn 1859, the same year the Saunders divorced, McFadden and his wife Margaret bought the southern half of the Saunders claim. He was then the top judge on the territorial Supreme Court. The house they built there still stands as the oldest structure in Lewis County, and it is listed on the National Register as the O. B. McFadden House. In 1863 McFadden also raised money to lay a log road across the mud of Saunders' Bottom.
- William West's farm and townWilliam West arrived in 1864 and bought 160 acres to farm. With him came his wife Elizabeth, their son Robert and Elizabeth's brother, John Dobson. Once the railroad came, West helped win the Chehalis station, invested in the first warehouse, organized the school district, led the campaign to bring the county seat to town and helped found its Episcopal church. He also served as county auditor, county treasurer, deputy sheriff and city councilman.
- Bomber wings in wartimeFrom 1943 to 1945 Boeing ran a plant in the Harry B. Quick building that made wing parts for B-17 and B-29 bombers, and the plant earned Boeing's excellence pennant. About 70% of its workers were Rosie the Riveters. In 2005, sixty years after the war ended, a plaque honoring them was mounted on the building.
- The Rose CityRed roses had long stood for Chehalis, which keeps a Municipal Rose Garden accredited by All-America Rose Selections. The city made the red rose its official flower in 1955, and the nickname "The Rose City" became official in 2000.
