About Chelsea, Alabama

Chelsea is a city of 14,982 people in north-central Shelby County. Settlers began arriving by the middle of the nineteenth century and called the area Melrose, but it stayed mostly farmland until the Atlanta, Birmingham, and Atlantic Railroad built its line through in 1908. A new community grew up along the tracks, and railroad officials gave it the name Chelsea.

With the trains came business. Stores opened near the line, along with a grist mill and a sawmill. Much later, new neighborhoods spread south from Birmingham into northern and central Shelby County, and Chelsea grew quickly with them. The census counted 10,183 people here in 2010 and 14,982 in 2020.

  • A city twice overChelsea was first incorporated on May 16, 1995, but errors in the process got that incorporation thrown out soon afterward. Residents held another vote, and on March 1, 1996, Chelsea was incorporated again, with 906 people.
  • Mt. Calvary Baptist ChurchMt. Calvary Baptist Church dates to about 1905, when Chelsea was still known as Melrose and the railroad had not yet arrived. The state has placed the church on its Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
  • A museum in City HallIn April 2012 Chelsea opened a historical museum inside City Hall, in rooms the public library had used. The library moved across the street into a restored historic home. The city also holds a Christmas Parade every December.
  • Below Double Oak MountainDouble Oak Mountain, the southern tip of the Appalachian chain, rises to the northwest of Chelsea. Some of the city stretches up onto that ridge along U.S. Route 280, the highway that leads 19 miles northwest to downtown Birmingham.
