About Indian Springs Village, Alabama
Indian Springs Village is a town of 2,481 people in northern Shelby County, part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. It became a town on November 14, 1990. The people who incorporated the village, only 1.5 miles square, set one firm condition: the town would never collect its own sales or property taxes.
With no local tax money for salaries, the mayor, the council and the town's administrators all serve as volunteers. A part-time city clerk is the only person on the payroll. The county provides police and fire protection, and the town runs on its share of state and county tax revenue.
- A boarding school since 1952Indian Springs School opened here in 1952 as a progressive boarding school for both boys and girls. It now takes day students as well as boarders. It is still the only school in town and the place Indian Springs Village is best known for.
- The Palm Sunday tornadoOn Palm Sunday, March 27, 1994, an F2 tornado damaged business buildings in Indian Springs on a path that also hit Pelham, Helena and Inverness. Another tornado struck on March 25, 2021. It damaged several homes with EF2 winds and brought down trees across several neighborhoods, then grew to low-end EF3 strength after it left town to the northeast.
- Easter eggs and the FourthThe town rents its town hall and a pavilion with 140 seats to residents for parties and gatherings. Each year it also holds an Easter egg hunt and an Independence Day celebration.
