About Chester, Massachusetts
On August 2, 1975, Chester reached 107 degrees Fahrenheit, tying New Bedford for the hottest reading in Massachusetts history. On January 12, 1981, it fell to 35 below zero, the coldest ever in the state. Chester is one of only three U.S. places to hold both state extremes.
The town was incorporated in 1765 as Murrayfield. People often mixed up that name with nearby Myrifield, so the town asked to be renamed Fairfield. The General Court picked Chester instead in 1783.
