About Russell, Massachusetts

In 1904, Horace A. Moses bought the Strathmore paper mill in Woronoco, a village in Russell. He built Woronoco into a model company town with fine housing and community buildings. He based it on a trip to Strathmore, Scotland. Moses later co-founded Junior Achievement.

Horace Moses also built a 1,600-acre estate around Russell Pond, where he raised prize apples and hunting dogs. He later sold parts of it to the Boy Scouts. It is now the Horace A. Moses Scout Reservation, and his summer home still stands there.
