About Chester, South Dakota
Chester is a community of 257 people in the southeast corner of Lake County, a mile south of Brant Lake and 15 miles southeast of Madison, the county seat. The town was laid out in 1905 and took its name from Chester Township, the township around it.
Skunk Creek, the stream that drains Brant Lake, runs along the western side of the community. From there it flows on toward Sioux Falls, where it meets the Big Sioux River. Chester's children attend the Chester Area School District 39-1.
“With the community in the throes of the Great Depression, Chester's veterans felt an even greater need for camaraderie and service.”
- A new center after 1992A tornado struck Chester in 1992 and destroyed the Fire Hall, and the town saw that it needed a new community center. American Legion Post 136 sold its own building and gave the money toward the Chester Community Center.
