About Childress, Texas
Childress is the seat of Childress County, located at the junction of U.S. highways 287, 62, and 83. Named for Texas Declaration of Independence author George C. Childress, the community emerged in 1887 from rival townsites called Childress City and Henry. It later remained an important agribusiness center, marked by cotton gins and grain elevators.
- Two TownsitesChildress City and Henry competed for county seat before residents and businesses relocated to the new Childress by September 1887.
- Railroad FoundationsThe Fort Worth and Denver City Railway built a depot, section house, and the Dwight Hotel during the town's early boom.
- Courthouse HistoryFire consumed the original courthouse in 1891, and its ornate stone replacement served until the present courthouse was built in 1939.
- Incorporated in 1890At incorporation, Childress had 621 residents as well as stores, a theater, a post office, and other businesses and institutions.
- 2020 PopulationThe 2020 census recorded 5,737 people in Childress.
