About Church Hill, Tennessee
Church Hill is a city of 6,998 people in Hawkins County, set among rolling hills on the north end of Smith Bend, above the Holston River. No other town that lies wholly inside the county is larger, and Bays Mountain rises along its southern skyline.
In the late 18th century the place was a trading post and a stop for stagecoaches, known then as Spencer's Mill and Patterson Mill. Methodists later built a church on a hill looking out over the Holston River valley, and the settlement came to be called Church Hill after it. That church still stands on Grandview Street, and the city was incorporated in 1958.
- Carter's Store in the 1770sTennessee pioneer John Carter opened a trading outpost here in the 1770s, and people knew it as Carter's Store. Settlers came to it to trade long before the Methodist church gave the town its name.
- Canton HallThe Hord family's plantation in Church Hill was called New Canton. Its antebellum house, known as Canton Hall, became one of the most famous landmarks in the city.
- A library since 1952Church Hill Public Library opened in 1952 and moved into a new building in 2007. Today it is part of Hawkins County's library system, holding more than 20,000 items and serving over 6,000 patrons.
- Lloyd Carr's hometownLloyd Carr was born in Church Hill and spent his early childhood here. He grew up to become head football coach at the University of Michigan.
