About Clayton, Delaware

Clayton is a town of 3,961 people in Kent County, with a small piece reaching into New Castle County. It began in 1855, when the Delaware Railroad pushed its tracks south from Bear through Kent County. People in Smyrna argued over whether the line should pass east or west of their town. Farmers about 1.5 miles to the west persuaded the railroad to come their way, so the new stop was called Smyrna Station.

In 1861 the state planned to rename the stop Clayton to honor John M. Clayton, a lawyer and politician who had backed the railroad, but it dropped the plan. Residents used the name anyway. In 1867 a rail link to Smyrna opened and the state renamed the place Smyrna Junction, yet that same year the local paper started up as the Clayton Herald. The new name never stuck, and Clayton became an incorporated town on April 15, 1887.

“In 1922, the new Smyrna Colored School opened its doors for African-Americans and other persons of color residing in Central Delaware.”
Delaware Public Archives
  • Where two railroads metIn 1874 the Kent County Rail Road carried its line from Massey's Crossroads to Clayton. From then on, trains ran through town both north and south and east and west, and the Clayton Railroad Station is now on the National Register. Rail still matters here: the Delmarva Central Railroad's line runs through Clayton and trades cars with the Norfolk Southern Railway in town.
  • Its own electric departmentClayton's Public Works department supplies electricity to about 1,200 customers in town. Clayton belongs to the Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation, which sells power wholesale to the town-run electric departments across the state.
  • A school district until 1952Clayton once ran its own school district. On April 22, 1952, it merged into the Smyrna Special School District, which joined with Kenton School District 9 on July 1, 1969, to form the Smyrna School District. Clayton students now attend Smyrna High School.
