About Cliffside, North Carolina

Raleigh Rutherford Haynes founded Cliffside in 1899 as a company town around his textile mill on the Second Broad River. Haynes and his partners owned every home and farm. Each household needed at least one member working for Haynes. Residents could not even keep dogs. The town peaked in the 1950s with about 2,500 people.

  • What the mill madeCliffside sat on the bank of the wide, muddy Second Broad River. At the main mill beside the dam, workers turned terry cloth into beach wear.
