About Clifton, Tennessee
Clifton is a city of 2,651 people in Wayne County, set on the Tennessee River near Alabama. It grew up in the 19th century as a river port, where boats tied up along the bank to load and unload. Schooling came early: the Masonic Academy went up at Clifton in 1855, and Frank Hughes College was built here in 1906. The college has since closed, but the Frank Hughes School still carries the name.
- Forrest's crossing in 1862On December 15, 1862, General Nathan Bedford Forrest brought a Confederate force of eighteen hundred men over the Tennessee River at Clifton. From there they set out on a raid of two hundred miles against Union lines and supply routes, meant to hold up the Union campaign against Vicksburg.
- A Pulitzer winner's homeThe novelist T. S. Stribling kept his home in Clifton. His books were widely read in the 1920s and 1930s, and The Store, the second novel of his Vaiden trilogy, earned him the 1933 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Today the city runs the T. S. Stribling Museum in his house.
- New growth since 1990After 1990 Clifton began to grow again. Mousetail Landing State Park opened to the north, a new bridge was built across the Tennessee River, and Columbia State Community College started a branch campus here. The state also brought the South Central Correctional Facility to Clifton, a privately run medium-security prison with room for 1,700 adult men.
