About Coesse, Indiana

Coesse had a post office before it was a town. Opened on March 15, 1843, it was the third post office in the county. It was named for the Indian chief Coesse and stood on the Ruckman farm. When the Pennsylvania Railroad began running, the office moved to the new town that took the same name.

Peter Simonson laid out the village of Coesse in the winter of 1854 and 1855. The railroad owned the east forty acres, and Simonson owned the west forty. His brother surveyed the town.
