About Cohoes, New York

Cohoes is a city in the northeast corner of Albany County, where the Mohawk River splits into channels and islands before it joins the Hudson. It takes its name from the Cohoes Falls, and in 1823 Horatio Gates Spafford wrote that the Mohawk word behind it meant "Place of the Falling Canoe." In 1632 an agent of the Dutch patroon Killiaen Van Rensselaer paced off a huge triangle of land around the meeting of the rivers. From the 1690s the patroon leased farms here, but he kept a strip below the falls for future water mills.

Those mills came after 1831, when the new Cohoes Company dammed the Mohawk above the falls. Spring ice carried that dam away, so the company built another the next year and dug two canals to power the factories. The Harmony Manufacturing Company started in 1836, Cohoes became a village in 1848 and a city in 1869, and the Harmony Mills, finished in 1872, were the biggest cotton mill complex anywhere on earth. Immigrants filled the jobs, and by 1881 French-Canadians from Québec made up more than 30% of the people in the city known as the Spindle City.

“the air was infected with its stench... perceptible for two miles to leeward.”

  • Whale Island, about 1646Early in the Dutch years, a whale swam up the Hudson and ended up stranded on an island in the Mohawk just below the Cohoes Falls. The Dutch settlers had no easy way to reach the huge body and haul it off, so it rotted where it lay, and the river ran slick for three weeks. From about 1646 the settlers called the place Whale Island.
  • A mastodon under Mill No. 3In 1866, workers digging for Harmony Mill No. 3 spent several weeks bringing up the bones of a mastodon. For years the skeleton greeted visitors at the New York State Museum in Albany, and the Cohoes Public Library now shows a furred replica. The mill itself ran over 1,000 feet, and people have called it the country's longest continuous textile mill of its time.
  • Headquarters for two generalsThe Van Schaick Mansion went up on Van Schaick Island in the 1730s, on the first ground in Cohoes to be settled and farmed. During the Revolution, the American Major Generals Philip Schuyler and Horatio Gates used it as a military headquarters. Armies had camped on these islands since the French and Indian Wars, because they made the mouths of the Mohawk easier to ford.
  • Bobby Leach's practice runsAround the start of the 20th century, the daredevil Bobby Leach rode a barrel over the Cohoes Falls to practice before trying the same stunt at Niagara. Crowds watched him from the lawn and porch of the Cataract House, a Victorian hotel at North Mohawk and School streets. The School Street Power Station now stands on that spot.
