About Troy, New York

Troy is a city of 51,401 people and the seat of Rensselaer County, on the east bank of the Hudson River just northeast of Albany. Mohican groups owned the land along the Poesten Kill and the Wynants Kill, and they sold it to Dutch buyers between 1630 and 1657, with the sachem Skiwias signing every deed. The ground then became part of Rensselaerswyck, the patroonship of Kiliaen van Rensselaer.

Dirck Van der Heyden, one of the first settlers, bought a 65-acre farm here in 1707, and in 1787 that farm was laid out as a village. The little community, then known as Ashley's Ferry, took the name Troy in 1789, after the Greek city of Homer's Iliad. It became a town in 1791, a village in 1801 and a chartered city in 1816, and it chose a Latin motto, Ilium fuit, Troja est, meaning "Ilium was, Troy is."

  • The home of Uncle SamDuring the War of 1812, army supplies moved through Troy, and a local butcher and meatpacker named Samuel Wilson sold meat to the troops. Local lore says he stamped his barrels "U.S.," which people read both as United States and as Uncle Sam, meaning Wilson himself. Troy has claimed Uncle Sam ever since, and Wilson is buried in Oakwood Cemetery on the city's northern edge.
  • A Christmas poem's first printingOn December 23, 1823, The Troy Sentinel printed "A Visit from St. Nicholas," the poem better known as "The Night Before Christmas," with no author's name attached. Clement Clarke Moore has long been credited with writing it, though some now believe the author was Henry Livingston Jr.
  • RPI, founded in 1824Stephen Van Rensselaer, who also led troops in the War of 1812, sponsored Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1824 so that science could be put to everyday use. No technological university in the English-speaking world is older. RPI later took over the campus of Troy University, a liberal arts school that closed in 1862 during the Civil War.
  • Detachable collars in 1825Hannah Lord Montague grew tired of washing her blacksmith husband's shirts when only the collars got dirty. She cut the collars off, bound the edges and sewed on strings to tie them in place, which also let collars and cuffs be starched on their own. She patented the idea, Maullin & Blanchard made them, and that firm was later absorbed by Cluett, Peabody & Company, makers of Arrow shirts.
  • Two major league teamsThe Troy Haymakers joined the National Association in 1871 and played two seasons, managed for a time by catcher and Civil War veteran Williams H. Craver. After seven seasons without a team, the city returned with the National League's Troy Trojans from 1879 to 1882, and a young Dan Brouthers, who became baseball's first great slugger, played for them.
