About Colesville, Maryland

Colesville is a community of 15,421 people in eastern Montgomery County, lying between two branches of the Anacostia River, the Northwest Branch and the Paint Branch. Archibald Edmonston patented the first land here in 1714, a 900-acre tract called "Easy Purchase," but none of the early owners lived on their land. That changed in 1723, when Robert Lazenby bought 217 acres of the "Wolf's Den" tract from William Beall and became Colesville's first resident farmer.

A settlement grew where the Annapolis Road, now New Hampshire Avenue, crossed the Old Annapolis Road, now Randolph Road. Records first use the name in 1804, spelled Coalsville, and by 1851 the crossroads held two stores, a hotel, a post office and at least one tavern. The old spelling lasted a long time, and some people still wrote Coalsville as late as 1906.

  • Milimar, built around 1790Milimar, at 410 Randolph Road, is the oldest house still standing in Colesville. Some call it the Old Lazanby Home, but its builders were most likely Samuel and Mary Peach. The couple bought the 164.5-acre "Peaches Lot" from Evan Thomas soon after he freed his slaves. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • The mill on Paint BranchIn the 1790s Peter Kemp put up a saw and grist mill on Paint Branch, at the spot where Randolph Road now crosses the stream. The mill was rebuilt twice. The last version, built by Franklin Pilling in 1879, had stopped running by 1930, and it still stands in Valley Mill Park.
  • A school the families asked forIn 1921 Black families in Colesville and nearby Smithville asked for a new school. They got it in 1928: a two-room building funded jointly by local residents, the county school board and the Rosenwald Fund, one of sixteen schools for African Americans in the county built with Rosenwald help. The Smithville Colored School closed in 1952, when the county merged its schools for Black children.
  • Grover Cleveland at Valley ViewJoseph F. Burr began buying land around Colesville in 1869 and owned nearly 1,000 acres by 1872. He lived in a mansion called Valley View on the north side of what is now Randolph Road, and his friend President Grover Cleveland came to visit often. The Holy Family Seminary of the Sons of the Holy Family has occupied that site since 1946.
  • Strawberries every MayFor more than 25 years Colesville held a Strawberry Festival each May where Hobbes Drive meets New Hampshire Avenue. Local sellers offered fresh berries and ice cream, and volunteers ran carnival games for the children. The festival ended in 2011.
