About Burnt Mills, Maryland
Burnt Mills is a census-designated place of 3,592 people in Montgomery County, on the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River near Silver Spring. The river drops in a fast waterfall here, and in the mid-eighteenth century part of the land received a patent under the name "Mill Seat." The first mill on the site was lost to fire sometime before 1788, and the name Burnt Mills stayed with the spot and the neighborhood around it.
Millers kept grinding grain and sawing lumber here from 1745 to 1922, in one grist, saw or flour mill after another. A later grist mill stood on the southeast side of Colesville Road until 1930, when work began on a water filtration plant on the old mill site. The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission finished the plant in 1936, and it purified the drinking supply for both Montgomery and Prince George's counties. It shut down in 1962, when new plants on the Patuxent and Potomac rivers took over.
- The Morse filterRobert Brooks Morse, the commission's chief engineer, designed round filter structures made of concentric steel rings for the Burnt Mills plant. Adding chemicals, settling, rapid sand filtering and storing the clean water all happened inside one unit. His design became the model for the commission's later plant on the Patuxent, and the Burnt Mills plant now carries his name.
- Two houses and a damThe plant's office and pumping station were in two Georgian Revival houses at 10700 and 10701 Colesville Road, also called Columbia Pike. The filters and pumps were taken out after the plant closed in 1962, but both houses still stand, along with the steel and concrete hollow-deck dam across the river. A historical marker points out the plant and the site of Bealle's Mill.
- A synagogue from Capitol HillOrthodox Eastern European immigrants founded Southeast Hebrew Congregation on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., in 1909. Many Jewish families left Southeast Washington from the 1930s on, and in 1971 the congregation moved out to White Oak. Today it is Burnt Mills' Orthodox synagogue, serving a large Orthodox and Conservative Jewish community, and the Silver Spring Eruv takes in parts of the area.
