About Fulton, Maryland
Fulton is a community of 5,916 people in southern Howard County, with the Patuxent River along its southern edge. Thomas Browne, known as the "Patuxent Ranger," made the first European survey of this land in 1700. In the mid-1700s Richard Snowden, a Quaker whose grandfather had been one of Maryland's first iron ore producers, bought tracts up the Patuxent valley, and Rezin Hammond settled on part of the land in 1803.
German families later came to farm here, and Heinrich Jaeger was prominent among them. The crossroads was first called Waters, after Richard Waters, a farmer who also ran a blacksmith shop. He became postmaster when the Waters Store post office opened on December 29, 1874. On March 28, 1882, the post office took the name Fulton, honoring Charles C. Fulton, the popular editor of the Baltimore Sun.
- St. Paul's since 1871German families met in one another's homes during the 1860s, then dedicated St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1871, where the first services were held in German. In 1932, as the Depression grew worse, members approved a new sanctuary in the Gothic Revival style, built of Marriottsville stone. It was dedicated on New Year's Day 1933.
- Maple Lawn turkeys since 1938In 1839 Heinrich Iager bought 108 acres of farmland and later grew it to 185 acres, forming Maple Lawn Farms. The farm began raising free-range turkeys under the Sho-Nuf brand in 1938, and in 2004 its registered Holstein dairy herd earned national recognition.
- One-room school until 1939By 1878 Fulton had opened School House #3, a one-room school for white children about half a mile west of town. It stayed in use until 1939.
- From farm to Main StreetBy the late 1990s, Fulton sat between eastern Howard County, which had water and sewer lines, and the protected west, which used wells. Greenebaum & Rose Associates proposed a 1,168-unit project on part of the 506-acre Iager farm. Councilman Darrell Drown expected the zoning to take a night or two in January 1998, but the first phase needed 32 record-length hearings. Maple Lawn opened in 2004/2005 with Main Street-style shops and four office buildings.
