About West Laurel, Maryland
West Laurel is a community of 4,428 people in Prince George's County, Maryland. Alexander J. Wedderburn's father left him a 300-acre farm here, and in 1954 Wedderburn split off the first parcel and gave a few of its lots to a builder.
Wedderburn wasn't happy with the builder's work, so he built a house of his own to test the idea. It found a buyer so fast that he quit his post as the Smithsonian's Curator of Photography and went into development full time. That farm became West Laurel Acres.
- West Laurel AcresThe subdivision at Bond Mill Road and Sandy Spring Road holds 157 houses, all built between 1950 and 1975. Ranch houses lead with 122, and 114 of all the homes are raised ranches. The rest are 17 split-foyers, 11 split-levels, four Minimal Traditional houses and two Contemporary designs.
- A dam 129 feet highFrom 1952 to 1954 the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission dammed the Patuxent River at Rocky Gorge, off Brooklyn Bridge Road. Its reservoir was close in size to the one behind the Brighton Dam, but the new dam stood 129 feet tall, about double Brighton's height. First called the Rocky Gorge Dam, it now carries the name of T. Howard Duckett, one of the commission's founders.
