About Savage, Maryland

Savage is a community of 7,542 people in Howard County, where the Middle and Little Patuxent rivers meet and fall about 70 feet in 0.6 miles. Joseph White, grandson of the Mayflower's Peregrine White, opened a gristmill at the falls in 1734. In 1822 the Philadelphia merchant John Savage and the Williams brothers chartered the Savage Manufacturing Company and bought 900 acres of the White land for $6,666.67.

The company built a cotton factory, and by 1825 it employed 200 people at 120 power looms. It made sails for the clipper ships leaving Baltimore Harbor, along with many other cotton goods, and steam power expanded the mill in 1880. The mill closed in 1948, and Harry H. Heim bought it to make Christmas ornaments, even renaming the town Santa Heim. A renovation that began in 1984 turned the old mill into a permanent marketplace.

  • The last Bollman trussBaltimore engineer Wendel Bollman invented the truss system behind the iron railroad bridge at Savage. Built in 1852, it was one of roughly 100 such bridges the B&O raised along its route, and it was moved here in 1887 when a spur reached the factory. No other Bollman truss survives in the country, and it may be the last on earth. In 1988 the town's new $7 million elementary school was named Bollman Bridge Elementary.
  • Post office on Yankee HillIn 1835 the B&O finished its line to Washington, and Savage Station stood about a mile southeast of the mill. The next year, on January 13, 1836, the Savage post office opened on Yankee Hill, where Washington and Foundry streets meet, and Amos Adams Williams ran it as postmaster.
  • The Baldwin yearsThe Baldwin family managed the manufacturing company from 1859 to 1911. Carroll Baldwin Hall went up in the early 1920s to honor Carroll Baldwin, once president of the company, and the hall later held the Savage branch of the Howard County Library.
  • Hurricane Agnes in 1972In June 1972 Hurricane Agnes raised the Patuxent River 25.4 feet and washed out the road bridge at Savage. Its replacement opened on September 10, 1975.
