About Jessup, Maryland
Jessup is a census-designated place of 10,535 people that straddles Howard and Anne Arundel counties, roughly 15 miles southwest of Baltimore. Early maps called the spot Pierceland. After the Civil War it was better known as Jessup's Cut, or Jessop's Cut, a post village on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, named for Jonathan Jessup, a contractor who had already worked on the railroad's Main Stem.
Jessup was hired to level a two-mile stretch of the line, where a clay hill on Merrill's Ridge blocked the trains in freezing weather. His crews dug the cut by hand and hauled away more than 200,000 tons of clay. Prisoners from the Maryland Penitentiary made bricks from that clay, and some of them were later moved to the new Maryland House of Correction, whose walls they knew had come from the Cut.
- Prisoners still say "the cut"Prisons have stood in Jessup since the middle of the nineteenth century, and inmates still call them "the cut," often without knowing why. The Maryland House of Correction ran a large farm worked by prisoners to feed inmates there and elsewhere. It stopped holding inmates in 2007, though it lives on in references in Homicide: Life on the Street and The Wire, and the state-run Maryland Food Center now sits on the farm's land.
- One of three main stationsOn the railroad between Baltimore and Washington, Jessup was one of three main stations, and nearly every train stopped at Relay, Jessup or Laurel. Commuter trains still stop here today, at the Jessup station on MARC's Camden Line.
- Maryland's center of populationThe 2010 census placed the center of population for all of Maryland in Jessup, at the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center. The state opened that maximum security hospital in 1960 for people found not guilty of crimes by reason of insanity.
- Washington's road to BaltimoreJessup grew up near the site of Spurrier's Tavern, a farm and inn on the old post road linking Baltimore and Washington, the route that became U.S. Route 1. George Washington traveled that road regularly.
