About Colfax, Washington

Colfax is a city of 2,782 people and the seat of Whitman County, built where the Palouse River's north and south forks come together. On July 10, 1870, James Perkins and Thomas Smith staked a claim at the fork for Anderson Cox, a Waitsburg businessman who wanted a mill beside the fast river and its wooded banks. Smith soon left, but Perkins put up a cabin and called the settlement Belleville. He later changed the name to Colfax to honor Schuyler Colfax, the vice president under Ulysses S. Grant.

Cox's hired men built a sawmill that began cutting in September 1871, and it found steady buyers among settlers on the nearly treeless Palouse. In February 1872 residents paid A. L. Knowlton to lay out a town site. Colfax was incorporated on January 14, 1879, with William H. James, a former acting governor of Nebraska, as its first mayor. A fire on July 14, 1882, nearly wiped out the town and burned all of its records, but Colfax rebuilt, and the first Columbia and Palouse Railroad train pulled in on November 10, 1883.

  • 5,000 bushels promisedWheat was the main crop from the start. In 1871 farmers canvassed neighbors to pledge grain to a future Colfax mill, and by 1872 they had promises of at least 5,000 bushels. The grist mill rose on James Perkins's land late in 1873, ground 50 barrels of flour a day and soon ran day and night; an 1886 enlargement raised that to 125. It burned on July 9, 1920. Its 1936 replacement burned for good in 1957.
  • A river lined with concreteThe river forks that powered the mills also flooded the town in 1879 and 1893, and on March 1, 1910, three to five feet of water ran downtown. After another bad flood in February 1948, voters twice narrowly rejected flood-control bonds before approving them in 1959. Work began in 1962, and part of town flooded again in 1963 before crews finished.
  • The 1870 Perkins cabinJames Perkins lived for sixteen years in a log cabin built in 1870, now the oldest standing structure in Whitman County. In 1886 he built a Victorian house beside it on what is now Perkins Avenue, and his family lived there until 1968, when it was run down and slated to be torn down. The Whitman County Historical Society took it over in 1970 and restored it, and the James A. Perkins House joined the National Register in 1972.
  • The Codger PoleIn 1988 the men who had played in a 1938 football game between Colfax High School and rival St. John met for a rematch 50 years later. Carver Jonathan LaBenne honored them with a 65-foot chainsaw sculpture on Main Street: five upended red cedar logs carrying the faces of all 51 players, shown as old men in 1930s uniforms.
  • Machine Gun Kelly in 1932In 1932 George Barns, the gangster called Machine Gun Kelly, took $77,000 from the bank at 102 N Main Street, First Savings & Trust, the first time anyone had ever robbed it. The FBI later caught him, and he ended up in Alcatraz.
