About Collins, New York

Collins is a town of 5,894 people in Erie County, one of the Southtowns along the county's southern edge. Cattaraugus Creek marks its south line, which is also the border with Cattaraugus County. White settlers first arrived in 1811, and many of them were Quakers who came hoping to help the Native Americans living nearby.

On March 6, 1821, the town was split off from Concord and named for the Collins family, dairy farmers who took an active part in local public life. Collins later gave up land twice, first to form Brant in 1839 and then to form North Collins in 1852.

  • Ten cheese and milk factoriesDairy farms covered so much of Collins that the town once kept ten factories busy making cheese and milk products. The Taylor family, also dairy farmers, owned 500 acres in the northeast corner early in the nineteenth century, and Taylor Hollow and Taylor Hollow Road still carry their name.
  • Tubs from 1899 to 1933Near the spot where Route 62 meets Route 39, the Waltz Watermann Tubs company built tubs from 1899 to 1933. The neighborhood became known as Tubtown, and in the 1970s a bar there took that name to honor the old business.
  • Apple trees for patientsThe Gowanda Psychiatric Center, once the Homeopathic State Hospital, had McIntosh apple trees planted so its patients could enjoy them. Those trees have since run wild in McIntosh Woods, between the town and the village of Gowanda. The old hospital grounds now hold two state prisons, the Collins and Gowanda correctional facilities, on either side of Middle Road.
  • A farm and the soilWhites Corners, on NY-75 in the northeast corner, takes its name from Ezekiel White's large farm at the crossroads. The hamlet of Black Hills is named for the unusually dark soil found in its hills.
