About North Collins, New York

North Collins is a town of 3,504 people in the southern part of Erie County, one of the county's Southtowns. Settlers first came to the area in 1809, when this land belonged to the town of Collins. In 1852 the northern part of Collins was split off as a new town called Shirley, and in 1853 the new town took the name North Collins after its parent.

The town's main settlement grew up in its northwest corner, where US 62 meets NY 249, and it was once known as Rose's Corners and as Kerr's Corners. In 1911 that settlement incorporated as the village of North Collins, which made it a separate government from the town around it.

  • Shirley for one yearWhen it was carved from the north end of Collins in 1852, the new town was named Shirley. It switched to North Collins in 1853, and a hamlet called Shirley still sits southeast of the village, along Shirley Road.
  • A sixteen-sided barnThe Gamel Hexadecagon Barn is a barn built with sixteen sides instead of the usual four. It joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
  • Heyó꞉ähdöh in SenecaThe Seneca language has its own name for North Collins, Heyó꞉ähdöh. The South Branch of Eighteen Mile Creek, which empties into Lake Erie, runs across the town's northeast side past the hamlet of New Oregon.
