About Boston, New York

Boston is a town of 7,948 people in Erie County, one of the Southtowns southeast of Buffalo, and it takes its name from Boston, Massachusetts. Brothers Charles and Oliver Johnson brought their families here in 1804 as the first settlers, and a Free Will Baptist congregation formed around 1811. The town was split off from Eden on April 5, 1817, and its first post office opened on the north side in 1832.

Hard times came in 1843, when an illness thought to be typhoid fever, perhaps spread by a local well, struck 28 of the 43 residents and killed 10 of them. Many of the first settlers are buried in Maplewood Cemetery, across from the Boston Town Hall, where a gravestone also recalls the Love murder.

  • Three brothers hanged in 1825John Love, a Great Lakes sailor, rented a room from Nelson Thayer in October 1824, and the deeply indebted Thayer brothers owed him money. On December 15 Isaac shot Love through a window and Nelson finished him with a meat axe. Love's body turned up in a shallow ravine grave on February 23, 1825. On June 17, 1825, all three brothers were hanged in Niagara Square before a crowd said to number 20,000, Erie County's only public hanging.
  • Trains from 1906 to 1916In 1902 Frank and Charles Goodyear began a Buffalo and Susquehanna line from Wellsville to Buffalo to haul Pennsylvania coal and lumber to the harbor. Crews filled the gully of Landon Brook with earth, and by late 1906 Boston, Patchin and North Boston had stations. The line lost money and went bankrupt. It was sold in 1915, passenger service ended in November 1916, and the rails became World War I scrap. National Grid power lines now follow the route.
  • Patchin and Boston CornersThe hamlet of Patchin, near the center of town, was once called Boston Center and was renamed for Talcott Patchin, an early tanner and postmaster. The hamlet of Boston, in the south on Boston State Road, went by Boston Corners and Torrey Corners in earlier days.
