About Columbiana, Ohio

Columbiana is a city of 6,559 people, mostly in Columbiana County, with a northern district that reaches into Mahoning County. Joshua Dixon and William Heald laid out the town in 1805, and Dixon chose the spot for its center, where the Log House Museum now stands on the town square. The town took its name from the county, which honors Christopher Columbus.

The first local post office opened on that spot in 1809. In 1837, the same year Columbiana was incorporated as a village, that office became an early leader in free mail delivery. In 1861 the town gave up its one-room schoolhouses for an organized school district, and its first modern high school followed in 1864, though the first class did not graduate until 1881. Columbiana became a city in 2000, the year its current high school was built.

  • Harvey Firestone's hometownHarvey S. Firestone was born in 1868 on a farm near Columbiana and went to school in town. In 1900 he founded the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. He soon worked out how to turn out tires by the thousands while the car business was still new, and steady contracts with big carmakers kept his company strong. The Firestone family monument stands in Columbiana Cemetery.
  • Firestone Park, opened 1935In 1933 Firestone and his wife, Idabelle Smith Firestone, gave the city 53 acres for a park, and it opened two years later, in 1935. The Ohio historical marker there calls the park Firestone's lasting legacy to the town. The Firestone Farms shopping center, homes and golf course also carry his name.
  • The log house on the squareIn 1975 a log home was moved to the town square at 10 East Park Avenue, the spot Dixon had picked as the center of Columbiana. People in town restored it together, and it became the Log House Museum and the headquarters for the town's Bicentennial.
  • Jones-Bowman House, 1842The Jones-Bowman House at 540 Pittsburgh Street was built in 1842. It is believed to have served the Underground Railroad, and in 1976 it was added to the National Register.
  • A library since 1933Columbiana's public library was founded in 1933. Its first building, put up by the Public Works Administration, opened in 1939, and the library moved into a second building in 1990.
