About East Palestine, Ohio

East Palestine is a village of 4,761 people in Columbiana County, right at the line between Ohio and Pennsylvania. Thomas McCalla and William Grate platted the town in 1828 under the name Mechanicsburg. In 1833 it took the name of Palestine, the biblical land in West Asia, during a period when Salem, Medina, Enon Valley and New Galilee in the surrounding area were also taking religious names.

Another Ohio town in the western part of the state had already incorporated as Palestine, so this one incorporated in 1875 as East Palestine. It grew large enough to become a city in 1920. After the 2010 census counted fewer than 5,000 residents, it went back to being a village in 2011.

  • The first postmasterA doctor named Chamberlin treated patients here for 30 years and took on local offices as well. He was a township trustee in 1834, became postmaster in 1836 as the town's first, and was serving as township clerk by 1839.
  • Pottery since 1880A pottery opened in East Palestine in 1880, and in 1904 it became the W. S. George Pottery Company. The plant kept making dishes into the 1980s, by then as part of the Royal China Company.
  • Tires and orchardsIn the 20th century the McGraw Tire & Rubber Company and the National Tire & Rubber Company built automobile tires in town. Orchards grew into an industry too, and big buildings for storing and preserving fruit made East Palestine the area's top orchard city.
  • Four tracks by 1920When it became a city in 1920, East Palestine was served by four tracks of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Within a mile of town, switches on the Pittsburgh, Lisbon, and Western Railroad linked to the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie and the New York Central. Norfolk Southern's Fort Wayne Line still runs through.
