About Negley, Ohio
The town honors James S. Negley, who served as a major general in the Union Army. After the Civil War, he served in Congress and later headed a railroad, the New York, Pittsburgh and Chicago line. In 1883, the railroad laid out Negley, its first new town. It grew into a small mining community around a nearby coal mine.
An army expedition once marched straight through the forest here, hoping to awe Native people with its size. It camped at the foot of a beautiful knoll near Negley, at a spot known as Camp Boquet. When the expedition ended in peace, many captured prisoners were returned.
