About Comfort, Texas

Ernst Hermann Altgelt laid out Comfort in 1854, near the site of an Indian village. German freethinkers and political activists settled the area. The town stood for the Union in the Civil War. Many of its young men died in 1862 at the battle of the Nueces. A monument called Treue der Union, on High Street, honors them.

In the 1940s and 1950s the Hill Country was a world center for wool and mohair. Adolf Stieler of Comfort ruled that trade as the Angora Goat King of the World.

  • A rare surviving landmarkIn 1918 Albert Steves built a tall bat roost on his family farm at Comfort. The design came from Dr. Charles Campbell of San Antonio. He hoped bats would eat the mosquitoes that spread malaria. Sixteen such roosts were once built in America and Europe, and only two still stand. This is one of them.
