About Copenhagen, New York

Dr. Dunn was the first physician who settled at Copenhagen. He moved to the Genesee country in 1804. A year later, Dr. John Loud settled there and stayed until his death on March 3, 1831, at age 52. Levi Barnes built the first framed house in Copenhagen.

The village was once called Mungers Mills. In 1807 the British Royal Navy was bombarding Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Out of sympathy, residents voted to rename their community Copenhagen. The village sits in the town of Denmark in Lewis County.
