About Rutland, New York

Rutland is a town of 3,038 people in Jefferson County, lying east of Watertown and southwest of Fort Drum. Prehistoric remains show that native people lived here long before settlers came. The first settlers made their homes near Rutland Center around 1799, and in 1802 the town was carved out of Watertown, before Jefferson County itself existed.

The Black River runs along the town's northern edge, and most of its southern edge is the line with Lewis County. In 1844 Rutland took in an island in the river at Felts Mills, which had belonged to the neighboring town of Le Ray.

  • A mill in 1800The hamlet of Felts Mills began with a mill built in 1800 beside the Black River, on the town's northern line, and the settlement grew up around it. Today it is a census-designated place.
  • Black River, once LockportThe village of Black River was once called Lockport. It sits on the river with half its ground in Rutland and half in Le Ray, and in 1891 it incorporated as a village separate from both towns.
  • South Rutland, about 1805Tylerville, in the southern part of town where County Roads 69 and 161 meet, dates from around 1805. Its first name was South Rutland.
