About Cottageville, West Virginia
Cottageville is an unincorporated community of 114 people in western Jackson County, northwest of Ripley, the county seat. The first white man to see the spot was probably James McDade, a scout who hunted Indians. He reached Union District in 1796 along with two settlers, Benjamin Cox and William Hannamon. In 1802 Benjamin Wright put up a mill turned by horses where the community now stands.
Cottageville was established in 1858, and it has also gone by Moores Mill, Rhodess Mill and Wrights Mill. Early in the twentieth century it was a busy trading center with a bank, a newspaper, a tannery, a blacksmith, several stores and a station on the B & O railroad. That boom faded after the mill closed and the county's roads got better, and in the mid-nineteen-sixties the B & O tore up its tracks to Ripley.
- The county's first school, 1807Andrew Hushan taught the first school in Jackson County here in 1807. He is also credited with building the first hand mill in Union District.
- A grist mill since the 1840sA wooden grist mill stood in Cottageville from the 1840s. It ground full time until 1930 and part time until 1937. In the summer of 1965 the old mill burned down, and its foundation stones are still there.
- From poor farm to fairgroundsJust outside the original village, under a mile away, the county ran what people called the poor farm, an early form of public welfare. It shut down in the thirties with the New Deal, and its land became the Jackson County Junior Fairgrounds, where the annual Jackson County Junior Fair is held.
- Michael Coleman's graveMichael Coleman, a well known Indian fighter of the early days, was killed in the Cottageville area and buried there. A state historical marker tells his story.
