About Ripley, West Virginia

Ripley is a city of 3,079 people and the county seat of Jackson County, on Mill Creek. Its first owners were William, John and Lewis Rodgers, who received a grant of 400 acres in 1768 at the point where Sycamore Creek meets Big Mill Creek. Jacob and Ann Starcher bought the land, most likely in 1803, and Jacob built a grist mill there in 1824.

Starcher laid out the town, in 1830 by one account and 1831 by another. He named it for Harry Ripley, a young minister who drowned in Big Mill Creek shortly before his own wedding. When Jackson County was created in 1831, families along the Ohio River near Ravenswood wanted the county seat, and families living farther inland objected. The Virginia General Assembly gave the choice to an independent commission, which picked Ripley, and the town received its charter in 1832.

  • Eight acres for the countyIn 1832 the Starchers gave the new county 8 acres of their land. Two acres went to the courthouse and jail, and the other six were set aside for the county's general use. A public school and a cemetery were later built on that ground.
  • Three names for one post officeRipley's post office opened in 1832 as Jackson Court House. The name was cut down to Jackson in 1893, and in 1897 the post office finally took the town's own name, Ripley.
  • A Confederate raid in 1862Ripley stayed under Union control through the Civil War. The one break came in September 1862, when the Confederate General Albert G. Jenkins made a brief raid into the town.
  • The state's last public hangingIn 1897 John Morgan was hanged in Ripley for murder. It was the last public hanging in West Virginia, and the spectacle pushed the West Virginia Legislature to outlaw public executions soon afterward.
  • A president on the FourthRipley says it throws the biggest Independence Day party of any small town in the country. On July 4, 2002, President George W. Bush came to town and gave a public speech at the courthouse.
