About Coyote, New Mexico

Coyote is a community of 110 people in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, counted by the Census Bureau in 2020. The village is ringed by mountains, and in 1977 the U.S. Department of Agriculture's employee newsletter told how the Forest Service helped the people of Coyote get better television.

  • One fuzzy channelFor years the mountains around Coyote kept most TV signals from reaching the village. Its 38 families could pick up just one channel, the picture on that one came in blurry, and the winter months dragged on with little to do.
  • Sharper than the cityThe Forest Service worked together with others to bring a clearer signal into the village. When the work was done, Coyote had better television reception than many urban places, and the newsletter reported in 1977 that the long winters seemed to go by faster.
