About Crawford, New York
Crawford is a town of 9,130 people in the northern part of Orange County, where the Shawangunk Kill marks part of the line with Ulster County. Settlers first came to this land around 1740, when it belonged to the town of Montgomery. Crawford stayed part of Montgomery for decades and became a separate town in 1823.
- Butter capital in 1813Ten years before it broke away from Montgomery, the Crawford area had already earned a reputation as the butter capital of the world, a title it carried in 1813.
- Searsville and the railroadSearsville, which was first known as Searsburg, was once the center of the town's trade and the seat of its government. When the railroad was built through a different part of Crawford, Searsville lost that standing.
- Pine Bush, once CrawfordThe town takes its name from an early settler, whose name was also given to a settlement in the town's northwest corner. That place was called Crawford for a time and is now the hamlet of Pine Bush.
