About Shawangunk, New York

Shawangunk is a town of 13,563 people in southwestern Ulster County, along the Orange County line. Europeans first settled here in the 1680s. The area was made a precinct around 1710, and in 1788 it became the township of Shawangunk.

The name is first recorded in 1682, in a deed by which the Lenape granted land to Gertrude Bruyn. It is a Dutch spelling of a Munsee Lenape word or phrase that probably meant "in the smoky air." Bruyn settled beside a creek that later took the name, now the Shawangunk Kill, and the mountains rising west of the town came to share it as well.

  • A Lenape fort burned in 1663Before Bruyn's purchase, the Lenape kept a village and a stronghold known as the New Fort near here. In the Second Esopus War, Dutch forces destroyed them on September 5, 1663. No one knows for sure whether Shawangunk was the village's own name or a phrase coined when Bruyn bought the land.
  • Said "SHONG-gum" since 1777Locals pronounce the name "SHONG-gum," a shortened form of the Lenape original, and records show people saying it that way no later than 1777. The town is named for its largest stream, the Shawangunk Kill, which splits the town roughly in half on its way to the Wallkill River.
  • From air base to grasslandGaleville, a former hamlet on the west bank of the Wallkill River north of the hamlet of Wallkill, was once home to Galeville Army Air Base. The old base is now the Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Watchtower Farms since 1963Jehovah's Witnesses, through their legal body the Watchtower Society, have run Watchtower Farms, a printing facility, here since 1963. Tens of thousands of visitors come to it each year, and the people who live there form their own census-designated place, called Watchtower.
