About Gardiner, New York

Gardiner is a town of 5,610 people in south-central Ulster County. The Wallkill River runs north through its center, and the Shawangunk Mountains reach into its western side. Huguenots from France were the first settlers in this part of the valley, long before the town had a name of its own.

The New York State Legislature created Gardiner on April 2, 1853, by joining pieces of New Paltz, Rochester and Denning. It was named for Lieutenant Governor Addison Gardiner, and residents gathered for their first town meeting on May 17, 1853. In 1925 a large fire swept through Gardiner village and destroyed much of it.

  • A parish born in 1884Ireland Corners was an early name for Gardiner. Rev. James Mee, pastor of St. James Church in Milton, served it as one of his missions, along with Marlboro. In 1884 Ireland Corners became a mission of its own, with Wallkill and New Paltz added to it, and Rev. Charles Browne, a priest from England, took charge. Gardiner's new Church of St. Charles Borromeo was then dedicated, and Rev. Joseph L. Hoey became its pastor in 1886.
  • New York's oldest working farmThe Phillies Bridge Farm Project in Gardiner is called the oldest working farm in New York state. Today it runs on a community-supported agriculture model, and the nonprofit behind it puts much of its work into food-justice programs.
  • From railroad to trailTrains once ran through Gardiner on the Wallkill Valley Railroad. After the line was abandoned, its old corridor became the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail, which starts in the southern part of town and carries walkers and riders north to New Paltz.
