About the Village of New Paltz, New York

French Huguenots, among them Louis DuBois, founded New Paltz in 1678. Before crossing the ocean, they had sheltered in Mannheim, a town in the German Palatinate, or Pfalz. Locals there said Paltz. In 1677 the settlers bought the land from the Esopus, a Lenape people. Twelve partners, called the Duzine, governed the community.

The first settlers built their shelters on the east bank of the Wallkill River, along what is now Huguenot Street. The church, which doubled as a school, stood there with shops and a blacksmith. Many of those early buildings still stand as a living museum.
