About Rifton, New York

Rifton Glen was a manufacturing settlement on the Wallkill. It was once called Arnoldton, after the cotton mill B. J. Arnold and Company built there in 1828. For many years, its main industry was J. W. Dimmick's large carpet factory with woolen mills. Those mills gave work to many skilled hands.

In 1730, William Smith bought a farm near Rifton from Johannis Hardenburgh, who held the land patent. Smith was the first settler in that part of the town. His family handed the farm down from father to son for 141 years.
